Executive Director Corner
We have some exciting news to announce. Last week the Governor made two new appointments to the Nebraska Environmental Trust Board. Unfortunately due to Congressional District boundary changes, Vince Kramper no longer lived in the 1st Congressional District, but was now in the 3rd District and was not eligible to be reappointed. Vince’s term will expire March 10, 2013. The Governor has appointed Henry “Rick” Brandt of Roca to represent the 1st District beginning March 11, 2013.
We were sad to learn John Campbell of Omaha was not seeking reappointment when his term expires March 10, 2013, and the Governor has appointed Gerry Lauritzen to represent the 2nd District beginning March 11, 2013. The Governor has reappointed Sherry Vinton of Whitman to the 3rd District. Sherry will begin serving her second term on March 11, 2013. The two new appointments and one reappointment must be approved by the Nebraska Legislature.
Dr. Joann Schaefer has announced she will be leaving her position with the State of Nebraska next month and her position on the board will be filled by her replacement at the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Schaefer is one of the five agency directors on the board.
With the departure of three board members, we are losing a lot of experience and knowledge. Vince is the last original board member and has served since the Trust’s inception. I want to thank all three board members for their service to the Trust and wish them all the best. The three new Board members will bring new ideas and fresh prospective to the board.
The 2013 Legislative session is well underway. Senator Tom Carlson is the chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and the other committee members include Senators Brasch, Dubas, Haar, Johnson, Kolowski, Schilz and Smith. Two are new members to the committee, Senator Lydia Brasch is from Bancroft and Senator Rick Kolowski is from Omaha. Senator McCoy and Senator Christensen are no longer on the committee.
