Dunn was born and raised in Lincoln, and has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While taking classes for a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning, he served as an intern with Lincoln’s Recycling Office.

Dunn served on the National Waste Prevention Coalition’s Junk Mail Task Force from 1995-98. He has served on the board of the Nebraska State Recycling Association and currently serves on the board of directors of Country Club Condominium Association and United Ministries in Higher Education-UNO.

When attending national events for his profession, Dunn said he talks about the grants that the Nebraska Environmental Trust has helped make happen. “People look at Nebraska in awe,” Dunn said. “They can’t believe that Nebraska has that amount of money to fund such projects. We are unique in our funding and fortunate to help so many projects.”
